European shipping's CO2 emissions were higher in 2022 than reported in July - T&E
A new Transport & Environment (T&E) study has found that ships visiting European ports emitted nearly 135.5 million mt of carbon dioxide (CO2) in 2022, up from 130 million mt reported in July.

Every year, European shipping companies have to submit their emissions data to the European Union (EU). T&E has been using this data to assess the trends in European shipping emissions. However, the agency has revised its July assessment based on some fresh updates.
“Many operators however failed to provide their emissions data on time, meaning Europe’s total shipping emissions are now much higher than previously reported,” T&E disclosed.
The updated data still showed cargo and container ships as the largest emitters. In addition, LNG carriers and cruise ships remained the main drivers of increased emissions, according to the T&E study.
Among the top polluters in 2022, T&E has now reported that container ships emitted 37.9 million mt of CO2 compared to 37.2 million mt reported in July.
Bulk carriers accounted for 18.3 million mt of CO2 emissions, oil tankers for 16.7 million mt and ferries for 13.5 million mt. These emissions levels are higher than the previous figures of 17.4 million mt, 15.9 million mt and 12.9 million mt, respectively.
Furthermore, LNG carriers released 10.7 million mt of CO2, higher than the 10.1 million mt reported in July, T&E said.
