HD HHI wins approval for cruise-focused LNG bunkering vessel

Classification society DNV and ship registry Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) have approved a new 12,000-cbm LNG bunkering vessel concept developed by South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI).

Designed specifically for the cruise segment, the dedicated LNG bunkering vessel (LNGBV) aims to address operational challenges associated with refuelling cruise ships.

Unlike conventional designs, the vessel has no bridge wings, eliminating the risk of them interfering with cruise ships’ protruding lifeboats during bunkering operations. Bridge wings are extended platforms or walkways that extend outward on the port and starboard sides, providing the master and crew with a clear view along the vessel's sides.

The removal of the bridge wings reduces side visibility, which is compensated for by an onboard CCTV system.

“By enabling ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering operations without the need for a floating pontoon, this 12K LNGBV bunkering vessel is expected to make LNG bunkering for cruise vessels more efficient and flexible,” HD HHI’s chief tech officer Ryu Hong Ryeul said.
