MMMCZCS, Chilean government zero in on Magallanes for new green corridor

November 21, 2023

Magallanes, located in Chile's southernmost region, witnesses high average wind speeds, making it an ideal location "for the supply of clean, zero-emissions maritime fuels," MMMCZCS said.

The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) and the Chilean government will explore opportunities to develop Magallanes as a strategic location for the supply of clean, zero-emissions marine fuels.

The move is part of an agreement signed between MMMCZCS and the Chilean government in October. Last month, a Green Corridors Delegation from MMMCZCS visited Chile to explore potential renewable energy projects in the region.

MMMCZCS said the move, “adds to our existing focus and collaborative initiatives in the Antofagasta Region in the northern part of Chile, which has massive solar energy potential.”

Both entities will also collaborate on “green fuel production, updating of ports [infrastructure], shipping powered by green fuels for dedicated cargo owners to enable green supply chains,” MMMCZCS chief executive Bo Cerup-Simonsen said.

Announced in March 2022, the Chilean Green Corridors Network Project is an initiative launched by the MMMCZCS and the Chilean government and will be implemented in three phases. The project aims to set up a network of green corridors allowing for green maritime transportation of goods in and out of Chile.

Phase I: This stage focused on map routes, vessel types, fuels, operators and cargo owners to develop potential domestic and international green corridors. Altogether 17 corridors have been identified so far. Half of these are related to shipping within Chile, while the rest are for international shipping activity.

Phase II: This phase is slated to start this month. A feasibility assessment of technical, regulatory and commercial components to be set up for shortlisted corridors will be conducted to attract further project investments.

Phase III: In this phase, the aim is for vessels to ferry along these green corridors between the involved ports and establish zero-emission shipping routes.
