The 49,999-dwt dual-fuel methanol carrier, Cypress Sun, will be chartered by MOL from Osaka-based shipping firm Osaka Shipping.

The vessel will join Capilano Sun as a sister ship on a long-term charter deal with Canadian maritime transportation firm Waterfront Shipping Company (WFS). Capilano Sun, a dual-fuel methanol carrier, was delivered in 2021 and chartered to WFS by MOL.

MOL claims that methanol as a fuel can reduce emissions significantly. The company further says that net carbon dioxide emissions can be further reduced by producing methanol from non-fossil raw materials.

MOL currently operates 19 methanol carriers, including Cypress Sun, and has been steadily expanding the number that can run on methanol. It has five methanol dual-fuel tankers, including Cypress Sun, in operation.
