New partnership targets e-fuel trade route between Brazil and Belgium

June 5, 2026

This trade route follows a pre-feasibility study conducted in November 2025 that highlighted the competitive projected costs of e-fuels produced at Brazil's Port of Açu.

The trade route will be established by a consortium launched by the Global Maritime Forum (GMF) and RMI, and includes HIF Global, Fuella, NYK Line, Hoegh Autoliners and Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

The group will work to create a green shipping corridor between Brazil's Port of Acu and Belgium's Port of Antwerp-Bruges.

Green shipping corridors are considered central to the shipping industry's target of ensuring that zero-emission fuels account for at least 5% of the sector's fuel consumption by 2030, GMF said.

The partners will assess the infrastructure, vessel requirements, and business models needed to establish a supply chain for transporting zero-carbon fuels produced at Acu, including e-methanol and ammonia, to Europe.

The shipping operations themselves are expected to be powered by the same zero- or near-zero-emission fuels.

"We're thrilled to be working with these partners to take these important steps towards Brazil's e-fuel production and bunkering opportunity, while supporting the growing demand for e-fuels in Europe," said Eleanor Wells, senior project manager at the Global Maritime Forum.

Earlier, a 2024 report from the same two organisations also identified the Port of Açu as a high-potential e-fuel export hub.
