Rotterdam’s second-quarter bio-bunker sales surge 44%

Biofuel’s share of total volumes almost doubles

Rotterdam surpasses Singapore in biofuel bunker sales

Changes between the second quarter of 2025 and the second quarter of 2026:

• Bio-VLSFO sales up by 76,000 mt to 145,000 mt
• Bio-HSFO sales down by 8,000 mt to 30,000 mt
• Total bio-MGO sales up by 9,000 mt to 43,000 mt
• Bio-ULSFO sales down by 3,000 mt to 22,000 mt
• Bio-methanol sales down by 1,000 mt to 3,000 mt
• LBM sales up by 1,000 mt to 3,000 mt
• Bio-ethanol sales of 1,000 mt recorded in second quarter

Bunker suppliers in Rotterdam sold 247,000 mt of bio-bunker fuel in the second quarter, up 44% from the same period last year, port authority data showed.

Bio-bunker fuels accounted for 13% of Rotterdam’s total bunker sales, almost double their share a year earlier. This was the highest share recorded since the port began reporting biofuel volumes in 2021.

Biofuel bunker sales were up by an even greater 120% from the previous quarter, when volumes had fallen 33% quarter on from the fourth quarter of 2025.

Sales increased 28% year-on-year in the first half of 2026 compared to the first half of 2025.

Bio-VLSFO was the most popular biofuel blend. Sales more than doubled from a year earlier to 145,000 mt. Bio-VLSFO accounted for 59% of total biofuel sales, up from 40% in the second quarter of 2025.

Bio-VLSFO accounted for 8% of Rotterdam’s total bunker sales, compared with 3% a year earlier. They surpassed conventional ULSFO volumes.

Bio-MGO was the second-most-popular biofuel blend, accounting for 17% of total biofuel sales. Its volumes increased 27% year-on-year to 43,000 mt.

Meanwhile, bio-HSFO sales declined 22% year-on -year to 30,000 mt. Its share of total biofuel sales fell to 12%, from 22% a year earlier. However, volumes surged 522% from the previous quarter.

Bio-ULSFO sales decreased 10% year-on-year to 22,000 mt, accounting for 9% of total biofuel volumes.

Liquefied biomethane (LBM) bunker sales increased 58% year-on-year to 3,400 mt, while bio-methanol volumes fell 28% to 2,800 mt.

The second quarter was the first quarter in which bioethanol bunkering was recorded in Rotterdam, with 1,000 mt supplied.

Rotterdam up, others down

Comparatively, biofuel bunker volumes in Antwerp-Bruges decreased 36% year-over-year to 27,000 mt in the second quarter, data showed last week.

Singapore’s bio-bunker sales declined 62% year-on-year to 152,000 mt in the second quarter. This put Rotterdam ahead of Singapore in biofuel bunker sales.
