Ammonia is widely transported as cargo but is still rarely used as a marine fuel due to limited engine technology and its highly toxic nature, which demands strict safety measures.

MMMCZCS conducted the new demonstration project in the Port of Rotterdam, showing that ship-to-ship (STS) ammonia bunkering can be carried out within an active port environment, with proper safety and regulatory frameworks.

The demonstration was part of the EU-funded MAGPIE (sMArt Green Ports as Integrated Efficient multimodal hubs) project, focused on testing operational feasibility of ammonia as a future bunker fuel, MMMCZCS said.

The project has validated the Port of Rotterdam’s ammonia safety framework for ammonia as a fuel and the International Association of Ports and Harbours’ (IAPH) Port Readiness Tool for alternative marine fuels, the agency added.

MAGPIE is a European project focused on developing, testing and demonstrating efforts to achieve sustainable and smart port logistics.
