Towngas urges green methanol push in Hong Kong's five-year plan
The Hong Kong and China Gas Company (Towngas) has urged the Hong Kong government to strengthen the city's green methanol bunkering capabilities as part of its first Five-Year Plan.

The gas utility firm has submitted its recommendations as part of the government's ongoing consultation on the plan, which covers 2026-2030.
The proposal suggests improving methanol bunkering infrastructure at the port, although Towngas has not elaborated on the details.
The company has called on the government to prioritise the commercialisation of green methanol and lead the development of an internationally aligned certification framework for green fuels.
The recommendations align with Towngas' own investments in green methanol production.
Its joint venture, VENEX, is developing a 200,000 mt/year bio-methanol plant in Guangdong province, with output intended for applications including marine bunkering in Hong Kong. The facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2028.
Together with Towngas' existing plant in Inner Mongolia, the project will increase the company's bio-methanol production capacity to around 500,000 mt/year.
