Crude oil production grew by 350,000 b/d in 2025, “setting a new annual production record,” the EIA said.

Production from the lower 48 states, excluding the Gulf of America, accounted for roughly 11.3 million b/d, or 83% of the total US crude oil production last year.

The remaining oil was largely produced by the Federal Gulf of America (GOA) and Alaska, the EIA reported.

In 2025, the number of active rigs per month producing oil in the lower 48 states was 5% less than in 2024. Despite the decline in rig activity, “efficiency improvements that we saw in 2024 continued through 2025 and resulted in a slight increase in crude oil production,” the US agency noted.

As of last week, the total number of rigs drilling for crude oil and natural gas in the US stands at 543 units last week, according to Baker Hughes – down by 49, or around 8% compared to a year earlier. Of this, the number of active oil rigs stand at 409.
