Based in Galicia, the terminal has secured the European Union’s International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU). This certification ensures that bio liquefied natural gas loaded onto ships or tankers can be sourced partly or entirely from renewable and sustainable origins, supported by a traceability system and verified sustainability certificates.

The new capability allows bio-LNG to be loaded both onto vessels and tanker trucks, according to the company.

“BioLNG is one of the renewable fuels recognised as meeting these objectives [targets set by the FuelEU Maritime regulation] and enables a reduction of up to 92% in net CO2 emissions compared to heavy fuel oil, the traditional fuel in the maritime sector,” said Nuria Rivas, head of the Mugardos Energy Terminal.

Bio-LNG is fully compatible with conventional LNG, meaning it can be stored, handled and used within existing infrastructure without any technical modifications, and can be injected directly into the natural gas network.

Located at the port of Ferrol, the Mugardos terminal has been operational since November 2007. It is equipped with two storage tanks with a combined capacity of up to 300,000 cbm (around 134,100 mt) of LNG, maintaining the fuel at –160°C under near-atmospheric pressure.
